Dear Neighbors and Friends:
I want to share some important news about Episcopal Health Services, Inc. of Long Island (EHS) which represents a remarkable chapter in our proud history.
On December 29, 2000, we emerged from bankruptcy, which became effective on April 2, 2001, just 13 months from the date of inception. EHS has generated an operating gain of $3.2 million for the four months post bankruptcy. With the help of Kurron Shares of America, Inc., our health care management and restructuring company, EHS and its subsidiaries are on a schedule to repay its creditors over the next four years in accordance with the Plan of Reorganization. This splendid accomplishment will enable us to continue to fulfill our mission of providing quality health care to the people of Brooklyn, Queens and Nassau County through our hospital and nursing homes.
Under the leadership of Corbett A. Price, our outstanding management team negotiated the sale of the Smithtown properties including a hospital, medical office building, nursing home and a senior housing complex; and successfully mediated scores of labor difficulties which otherwise would have resulted in the loss of jobs in the community. Their humane outlook on the problems faced by physicians inspired confidence and assured the continuing allegiance of our fine doctors.
I am also delighted to share with you that the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations has awarded St. John's Episcopal Hospital, South Shore (St. John's) a three-year accreditation. This affirmation of the quality of our health care, plus the fine work of our management team, will ensure that St. John's will continue to provide high quality health care to the community. We are committed to bringing St. John's, as well as Bishop Charles Waldo Maclean and Bishop Henry B. Hucles nursing homes, into the 21st Century in a manner consistent with the very finest medical care available anywhere in the region.
It is a very proud moment for us at EHS. A special thank you goes out to all that have been instrumental in our success and we look forward to continuing to serve all of our communities in need of quality health care.
Faithfully yours, The Right Reverend Orris G. Walker, Jr. VII Bishop of Long Island Chairman, Board of Managers
